Tips to make your time of the month easier

“That time of the month” is filled discomfort, moodiness, and cravings. Many women who have heavy periods experience severe PMS symptoms that can disrupt your life for several days. If you have completed childbearing, you could be an ideal candidate for the NovaSure procedure. In the meantime, there are some simple things you can do to ease your symptoms.

Plan Ahead

Having some things prepared in advance can be very helpful, from your meals to your wardrobe. Preparing some healthy freezer meals can really come in handy on those days when you just don’t feel up to cooking. Lean proteins, fiber, and iron are great places to start. Also, staying ahead of the game with a mini-wardrobe for when you’re not feeling great can be tremendously helpful. Things to look for are clothes that are accommodating and comfortable, but you don’t have to sacrifice style. Items like luxe cashmere sweaters, shirt dresses, and colorful tunics won’t constrict the abdomen and still look great. Another tip is to let those closest to you know that you’re not feeling great, which can allow them to give you some extra support during what can be a difficult time.

Get Active

Getting a little exercise can help with the discomfort that comes with heavy periods and PMS symptoms. Simple things like an easy walk or doing some gentle yoga poses can be a big help. Regular activity like this can really help with cramping and heavy flow. However, don’t push yourself too hard or overextend yourself. Talk with your doctor to determine a regimen that would best suit your needs.

Eat Well

Your diet directly affects your health, especially during your time of the month. Eating smaller meals more frequently during the day can reduce cravings, nausea, and cramps. A good rule of thumb is to shop around the periphery of your grocery store – items like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and nuts are perfect. A cup of coffee in the morning can also be very helpful. The caffeine and antioxidants can help with lethargy and cramps. Cravings are extremely common with heavy periods and PMS symptoms, which can lead to unhealthy eating habits. From chips and chocolate to cheeseburgers, there are plenty of things that might sound good at the time, but ultimately aren’t very good for your body.  Foods to avoid would include sugary, carbonated drinks and pre-packaged foods higher in sodium, which can increase bloating. Your diet is very important, so talk with your doctor to determine a course of action that would be most helpful for you.
